Choosing the Right Size Area Rug for Every Space For Every Time

Confused about the size area rug to purchase for your room? Are there rules to follow for choosing one? Believe it or not, there are standards which, when learned, will make your rug shopping expedition one of ease and delight!

It all begins with the floor plan.   For large rooms where you want to fill most of the space, larger rugs are the go-to. Smaller rooms, of course, will require smaller rugs.  Below are common area rug sizes:

  • 3’ x 5’
  • 5’ x 8’
  • 6’ x 9’
  • 8’ x 10’
  • 9’ x 12’
  • 10′ x 14′

In general, we purchase area rugs that are too small for our spaces for the simple reason that  5×7 and 6×9 rugs are less expensive than are 8×10 or 9×12’s.   Placing an inadequate area rug in a space will cause it to look like a out-of-place postage stamp!  And no one wants that!

Below is a perfect example of what NOT to do in a dining room.

The rule for dining rooms is that the rug should be able to fully accommodate the chairs after the they are pulled out for seating.

Above is a perfect example of what size rug SHOULD fit a seating arrangement like this.  Notice how the area rug slips slightly under the front legs of the sofa, while it completely covers the other pieces, unifying them all, making them feel like a unit.  This arrangement works nicely in most situations.

However, if your furniture floats in the middle of the room, as in the photo below, the rug should be large enough to accommodate all four legs of each piece of furniture.

Bedrooms are a slightly different story.  When selecting a rug for the bedroom, especially the master, consider that our feet want to touch a soft surface when getting out of bed.   Therefore, a larger rug is necessary, and is best placed approximately ⅔ of the way underneath the bed, whether a king, queen or twin bed.  The remainder of the rug should extend beyond the foot of the bed for added comfort.  See the photo below for a wonderful example.

Smaller and unusual size area rugs need to be reserved for in front of kitchen sinks, entry doors or as shown in the following photos.
